Portrait: The Exe Estuary

Published by Mf Publications, this is a descriptive suite in four movements, suitbale for a concert work, and as a 2nd/3rd Section test piece.

1. Estuary at Dawn

Where the rigging on the yachts in the estuary can be heard, birdsong, and the first train to Exeter is heard leaving the station at Exmouth. The faint, distant sound of the long removed ‘Bellboy’ is heard, together with the church bells of All Saints Church, and the piece moves through a crescendo to the first rays of the summer sun.

2: Exmouth Town

In the movement, the sounds of the bustle and trials of daily life in this busy town are heard, along with the sound of traffic, children, and shoppers going about their daily business.

3: Furry Dance Day in Lympstone

With a tongue in cheek reference to the famous ‘Furry Dance’ melody penned by Katie Moss in 1911, this piece depicts a day in the life of the village on the day of the Furry Dance, as the time for the evening’s frolics approaches.

4: Esplanade

This lively piece depicts a day for tourists on the beach at Exmouth, including a fairground, the seashore, and the crashing of the waves.
